Designing Safer Spaces for Brighter Futures

Tasked with resolving fragmented, over‑budget designs from another firm, THA delivered a cohesive, budget‑aligned solution as part of E&L Construction Group’s trusted team. The Calhoun County Youth Center—originally built nearly 70 years ago with an addition almost 60 years old—required a complete transformation to meet modern standards of safety, functionality, and care.

The renovation, totaling approximately $15 million, expanded the center from 15,117 to nearly 30,000 square feet, increasing capacity from 32 to 52 beds and replacing more than 70% of the existing structure. The updated design creates a brighter, more secure environment that supports rehabilitation and staff efficiency.

Key Features:

  • Podular residential layout for cohort activities, reducing unnecessary movement
  • All resident activities on the main level—no stairs required
  • Improved sight lines from master control for enhanced supervision
  • Natural lighting and virtual skylights for a calming atmosphere
  • Upgraded security cameras, communication systems, and mechanical systems
  • Integration of digital court hearing technology
  • Dedicated spaces for education, virtual court hearings, counseling, family visits, and medical care
  • Expanded classroom, counseling, and recreation spaces
  • Construction phased to maintain occupancy and security throughout

This renovation ensures the Youth Center can continue its mission of serving court-placed youth from across Michigan with programs such as detention, counseling, and behavioral treatment. The result is a safe, efficient, and purpose-driven environment that fosters positive change for residents and staff alike.
